Kamala for President

This past Sunday I was scrolling Instagram when I saw a post from President Joe Biden. He stated the following,

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

As a registered Democrat – I was furious! The rhetoric for the last couple of weeks has been that President Biden is too old to seek reelection. His abysmal performance at the most recent presidential debate against republican challenger, former President Donald Trump led me to believe that he couldn’t win a reelection or live out another four years in office. My immediate thought was why the Democratic party didn’t encourage President Biden to NOT seek reelection last summer to give another person the edge to campaign and beat Trump.

As I sat in my disdain – another post popped on my timeline. It was a photo of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The caption stated the following,

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”

#mindblown

In that moment, I felt the same excitement I had in 2016. For the first time in our history as a nation, a woman might be elected to the highest office in the country – President of the United States of America.

I wasn’t the only one excited. Between the announcement from President Biden on Sunday to Monday morning – grassroots donors raised $81 million in 24 hours! In addition, $1.5 million was raised by Black women during a three-hour Zoom call in support of Vice President Harris’ presidential bid. The excitement is here and personally, I am hopeful that history will be made as Vice President Harris has the resume and passion for the country to lead it into a prosperous future.

But – there is one thing that is constant in my mind as we get closer to the Democratic National Convention.

It’s racism.

The excitement of this historic moment is intertwined with the institutional and systemic racism that is within the fabric of the American flag. I saw a post on TikTok from creator @Shae The Historian and she put out a reminder on her video stating, “Black women take care of yourself please!” In the video, she reminded Black women to protect ourselves and our peace because for as exciting as this announcement is, it’s also going to bring out a high level of racism and hatred for Black women and the vice president will be the target. I was upset that it even needed to be said. But I am thankful for Shae reminding us to understand the assignment and protect our peace.

The announcement was made on Sunday. It’s Wednesday and people from the republican party have already referred to Vice President Harris as a “DEI hire”. This is incredibly inaccurate and disrespectful as she is an ELECTED US Senator, ELECTED Attorney General in California and an ELECTED Vice-Presidential candidate.

DEI hire MY ASS!

The attacks are already happening and per Shae’s video – I am angry, upset and not surprised at people wanting to discredit her record. At this point – it’s only going to get worse, but I refuse to let anyone who cannot search facts of Google ruin this for me.

Black women CONTINUE to stand on business and be a beacon of hope for this nation. A win for Black women is a win for everyone – regardless of race, religion, age, or sexual orientation.

This Black woman WILL stand with Vice President Kamala Harris and do my part to ensure she IS the next President-Elect on Tuesday, November 5th!

Why?

Because our future as a democratic society depends on it!
