Black. Girl. Iowa.

Episode 2 Recap: Scent of Success with Kourtney Perry

Success often begins with a single spark—an idea, an opportunity, or even a moment of frustration that pushes us to create something of our own. For Kourtney Perry, CEO of Ladie Lex Candles, that spark turned into a thriving business that not only fills homes with soothing scents but also provides a sense of peace and comfort.

In Episode 2 of Black. Girl. Iowa., I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kourtney to discuss her journey from a teenage mother navigating the workforce to a successful entrepreneur in Des Moines, Iowa. Her story is one of resilience, faith, and unwavering determination.

From Hustle to Entrepreneurship

Like many of us, Kourtney’s path wasn’t linear. She held various jobs—from working in Des Moines Public Schools to the construction and automotive industries—each experience adding to her skillset. However, she eventually found herself stuck in roles where advancement wasn’t an option.

“I have always hit a cusp where there was always somebody above me that was never going to move and allow me to move forward. So I had to leave.”

That realization led her to create Privacy LLC, a brand focused on event planning and brand management. But when the pandemic hit, she found herself experimenting with something new—candles.

The Birth of Ladie Lex Candles

At the height of COVID-19, Kourtney, like many others, was at home searching for a creative outlet. Inspired by her sister’s suggestion and her own passion for mental wellness, she began researching the benefits of aromatherapy.

“I found out all of the benefits that a candle can provide beyond just a great scent—it combats mental health struggles like anxiety and depression. And in that era during COVID, what were we all going through? Mental health issues.”

With that mission in mind, Lady Lex Candles was born. What started as a small venture quickly grew into a storefront and warehouse, allowing her to offer a range of products, including candles, wax melts, room sprays, and home décor.

Building an Empire, One Candle at a Time

Kourtney’s store is more than just a retail space—it’s an experience. Unlike mass-produced candles, her products are handcrafted to ensure quality and longevity.

“The same way that the candle smells before you purchase it is the same way it will smell when you burn it. And you can burn it all the way to the bottom.”

Beyond providing high-quality products, Kourtney is committed to uplifting other small businesses. She offers consignment opportunities for local entrepreneurs and mentors those looking to start their own journey.

“Somebody out there is not being supported, and they might not have that circle. So you should be there for them.”

Lessons in Success

Kourtney’s story is proof that success isn’t just about having a great idea—it’s about perseverance, faith, and taking advantage of every opportunity.

💡 Advice to Aspiring Entrepreneurs & Dreamers:
Just do it. “You’ll never know unless you try.”
Use every job as a learning opportunity. “Every skill I gained over the years, I used to build something of my own.”
Don’t be afraid to ask for support. “Take advantage of employer resources, professional development, and networking.”
Know your worth. “If a company isn’t willing to help you grow, it’s time to move on.”
