Episode 22 Recap: The Power of Journaling: A Reflection

Journaling has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From scribbling in my notebooks during class to my elaborate journaling routine today, writing has always provided me with an outlet for my thoughts, emotions, and experiences. In this post, I want to explore the benefits of journaling, my personal journey, and how you can get started on your own journaling adventure.

The Benefits of Journaling

Journaling is more than just putting pen to paper—it’s a form of self-care. According to research from the University of Rochester Medical Center, journaling can:

  • Help manage anxiety
  • Reduce stress
  • Cope with depression
  • Prioritize problems, feelings, and concerns
  • Track patterns and recognize triggers
  • Encourage positive self-talk and growth

It’s a simple yet powerful tool for improving mental well-being, processing emotions, and fostering self-reflection.

My Personal Journey with Journaling

I started journaling seriously when I was around 11 years old. Inspired by Harriet the Spy, I wanted a place to write down all my thoughts and observations. My first journal was hidden under my mattress—safe from prying eyes (or so I hoped).

In high school, my journaling evolved into something unique—I created a weekly “power ranking” of the cutest boys in my class. It was my own personal ESPN-style ranking system, where a simple “hello” from a boy in English class could bump him up the list! While it’s hilarious to look back on now, it reminds me how important my journal was—it was a place where my thoughts and feelings mattered, even if the outside world didn’t notice them.

As I got older, journaling became even more essential. I chronicled my thoughts, struggles, and triumphs through different stages of life. Recently, I revisited my journal from the last year of my marriage. It was an emotional read, but it reaffirmed why journaling is so valuable—it captures moments of clarity and reminds us of our growth.

My Current Journaling Routine

I currently write in multiple journals, each serving a different purpose:

  1. Daily Journal: I write in a notebook every day, sometimes a single page, sometimes several, depending on my mood.
  2. Five-Year Journal: A short daily entry allows me to look back at what was happening on the same day in previous years.
  3. Diamond Art Journal: I document my completed diamond paintings and reflect on the creative process.
  4. Write & Wreck Journal: A guided prompt journal that encourages deep self-reflection and creativity.
  5. Catch-All Journal: A space where I jot down random thoughts, track football scores, and brainstorm ideas.

How to Start Journaling

If you’re interested in starting a journaling habit, here are a few tips:

  • Pick a Notebook: Whether it’s a fancy leather-bound journal, a simple spiral notebook, or a digital journaling app, find something that suits your style.
  • Choose a Writing Tool: Any pen or pencil will do, but find one that feels comfortable for you.
  • Find a Quiet Space: Journaling is most effective when you can focus without distractions.
  • Use Prompts if Needed: If you’re unsure where to start, journal prompts can help. There are books, websites, and apps that provide great ideas.
  • Make it a Routine: Whether it’s daily, weekly, or monthly, set aside time to write consistently.
  • Remember, It’s Yours: There are no rules. You can write, sketch, add stickers, or keep it as simple as you’d like. Your journal is a judgment-free zone.

Final Thoughts

Journaling is a powerful way to express yourself, reflect on your journey, and create a record of your life. Whether you’re writing about your emotions, tracking personal goals, or just documenting your day, the most important thing is to make it your own.

So, have you ever kept a journal? Are you thinking about starting? Let me know what kind of journal you’d choose and what you’d write about. And if you’re already a journaling pro, share your favorite journaling tips!
