I cannot talk about or recommend this series to enough people! After adoring the first book, I approached the second installment with a mix of excitement and apprehension, worried it might not live up to my expectations. However, “Somewhere Beyond the Sea” exceeded them in every way, delivering an abundance of laugh-out-loud moments that had me smiling from start to finish. Here’s a summary on the book!

Somewhere Beyond the Sea centers on Arthur Parnassus, the headmaster of a magical orphanage on a peculiar island, as he grapples with his troubled past while striving to create a loving home for six extraordinary children. Supported by his partner Linus, the island’s sprite Zoe, and Mayor Helen, Arthur is determined to shield his family from the pain he once endured. However, when he is summoned to confront his dark history publicly, he faces a pivotal moment that could reshape their future, especially with the arrival of a new child who identifies as a “monster.” This heartfelt tale delves into themes of resistance, identity, and the lengths one will go to protect loved ones in the face of adversity.
In this sequel, we dive deeper into Arthur’s past as a magical youth, gaining valuable insights that enrich his character and the story. One of the highlights was witnessing Arthur transform into a Phoenix, a powerful metaphor for rebirth and resilience. His mission to protect not only the children in his care but also other magical youths who have faced mistreatment adds a layer of depth to the narrative, reminding us of the unfairness that often plagues those who don’t conform to societal norms.
What truly stood out to me in this book was the heartfelt bond that develops among the children. As they come to realize that they are the family they need for each other, their connection becomes a source of strength and comfort. This theme of chosen family resonates deeply, and the way they include David, the yeti, is something that I will cherish forever.
Additionally, the emotional moment when Lucy tells Arthur that he is dead, and Linus, Arthur’s partner, is referred to as “Papa,” brought tears to my eyes. These poignant interactions showcase the heartwarming depth of the relationships within this magical family.
Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a beautiful continuation of a series that I am eager to follow. I want to hear more from all the characters, as they truly shine in this story. The children are the stars, and their journeys are filled with love, acceptance, and adventure. I sincerely hope that TJ Klune continues this series, perhaps with two or even 10 more books, allowing us to further explore the lives of this wonderful, inclusive family. This enchanting tale is one I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a story that combines humor, heart, and magic.
