What does it mean to leave everything familiar behind and start a new life overseas? In this episode of the Black. Girl. Iowa. podcast, I had the chance to catch up with Shanice Whitney, an educator, traveler, and fellow Simpson College alumna, who is currently living and teaching in Doha, Qatar.

This conversation is all about self-discovery, embracing the unknown, and learning how to thrive outside of the comfort zone. Whether you’re considering teaching abroad, taking your first international trip, or simply dreaming of a new adventure, Shanice’s story is filled with wisdom, reflection, and inspiration.
Iowa Roots, Global Wings
Shanice and I first connected through our shared experience as Black women at Simpson College. We even participated in a panel together called Being Black at Simpson: A Women’s Perspective, where we shared our personal journeys navigating predominantly white spaces. Fast forward to today—Shanice is thriving abroad, living in Doha for her second stint teaching English in the Middle East.
Her decision to live abroad wasn’t just about career—it was about peace. It was about carving out a life that aligned with her needs, her values, and her dreams.
“Living abroad has brought me a peace I didn’t know I was missing.” — Shanice Whitney
Why Doha?
Why choose Doha, of all places? For Shanice, it’s the balance between professional opportunity and personal fulfillment. In the Middle East, she found not only a vibrant teaching career but also a slower pace of life that allowed her to prioritize her mental health, financial wellness, and personal growth.
“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that it’s okay to live life differently.”
In a world that often pressures us to follow a traditional path—career, house, family, repeat—Shanice’s story reminds us that we get to choose what success looks like for us.
Lessons in Letting Go
One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode? Shanice’s willingness to let go—of expectations, of societal timelines, and even of fear. Moving abroad required courage, but it also brought her closer to herself.
“It’s okay to start over. It’s okay to try something new—even if it doesn’t make sense to everyone else.”
This resonated deeply with me. How often do we stay in spaces—relationships, jobs, cities—that no longer serve us, simply because we’re afraid of the unknown?
Black Women Abroad: Representation and Community
Living abroad as a Black woman comes with its own set of challenges and blessings. Shanice shared about building community with other Black expats and how seeing the world through different cultural lenses has expanded her perspective.
“I’ve met Black women from all over the world who are redefining what life can look like.”
This episode isn’t just about travel—it’s about freedom. The freedom to live life on your own terms. The freedom to explore, to dream bigger, and to prioritize yourself.
