Black. Girl. Healing.: A Journey of Self-Care, Mental Health, and Growth

Healing is not a destination—it’s a continuous journey. It’s messy, unpredictable, and often requires more of us than we think we have to give. As I reflect on the past few months, I’ve come to realize just how essential it is to prioritize my well-being, lean into self-care, and give myself grace.

Between navigating major life transitions, therapy, and the ups and downs of mental health, I want to share what this journey has looked like for me. If you’ve been struggling, feeling stuck, or simply need a reminder that healing is possible, this is for you.

Checking In with Myself

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. A job transition, wrapping up grad school, and diving back into therapy have all played significant roles in my personal growth. I’ve had to take a step back and reevaluate where I’m directing my energy and how I’m prioritizing my peace.

One of the biggest changes I’ve made is setting boundaries around media consumption. I’ve significantly reduced my time watching cable news because the weight of the world can be overwhelming. Instead, I’ve been focusing on things that nourish my mind and spirit, like books, creative outlets, and intentional social media engagement.

Speaking of books—I announced the Black. Girl. Iowa. 2025 reading challenge, and I am so excited to dive into stories that challenge, inspire, and entertain. This challenge is my way of reconnecting with a love of reading that sometimes gets lost in the chaos of life.

Returning to Therapy and Prioritizing Mental Health

Going back to therapy has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Therapy is not just about processing trauma; it’s about learning how to move forward with intention. One of the biggest things I’ve been working through is understanding how past experiences shape my present, and how I can release patterns that no longer serve me.

I’ve learned that healing is not just about “getting better” but about being honest with myself. It’s about recognizing the signs when I’m slipping into a depression spiral and taking action before it completely consumes me.

In January, I hit a low point. Between adjusting to life after grad school, struggling with insomnia, and feeling emotionally drained, I found myself in a space of deep loneliness and self-doubt. I stopped taking my medication consistently, which only made things worse. Depression has a way of creeping in silently, making even the simplest tasks feel impossible. But the moment I acknowledged what was happening, I knew I had to fight for myself again.

One of the biggest realizations I had was how often I isolate myself when I’m struggling. I’ve learned that healing requires community, and that I don’t have to go through it alone. Reaching out to friends, getting back into creative projects, and simply allowing myself to feel without judgment have all been essential in pulling myself out of that dark place.

The Power of Creative Healing

Creativity has always been a form of therapy for me. Whether it’s journaling, podcasting, or even diamond art, having an outlet has been crucial in processing my emotions.

Recently, I attended a wine and canvas event hosted by a friend, and for the first time in a long time, I felt a sense of peace. I painted an abstract representation of my depression—a mix of cool colors with hints of brightness breaking through. That painting now sits on my desk as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is light.

Journaling has also been a lifeline. I’ve returned to daily journaling, tracking my mood, reflecting on my experiences, and documenting moments of gratitude. Writing allows me to see my growth in real-time, and it reminds me that no matter how heavy things feel, they are temporary.

Embracing Self-Love and Intentional Growth

As I continue this journey, I’m focusing on self-love in a deeper way. I recently started working through The Self-Love Workbook for Black Women by Rachel Johnson, LMSW & MFT, and it has been eye-opening. Too often, as Black women, we are conditioned to nurture everyone else while neglecting our own needs. But I’m learning that prioritizing myself is not selfish—it’s necessary.

I’m also making small but impactful changes in my daily routine, like:

  • Keeping a structured sleep schedule to ensure I’m getting enough rest.
  • Decluttering and reorganizing my space to create an environment that feels peaceful.
  • Setting aside time for joy—whether that’s taking myself out for a solo dinner, watching a favorite movie, or diving into a new book.

Conclusion: The Journey Continues

Healing is not linear. Some days are easier than others, and that’s okay. What matters most is that I continue showing up for myself, even on the hard days. I know now that I am not defined by my struggles, but rather by how I choose to rise from them.

If you’re on your own healing journey, I encourage you to give yourself grace. Take the time to check in with yourself, prioritize what brings you peace, and know that you are worthy of love and healing.
